Agadir Invests Nearly 20 MDH to Restore Place Al Amal

Agadir is revamping Place Al Amal with a 20 MDH project set for completion by September 2025. The overhaul includes infrastructure upgrades, landscaping, and public lighting. This initiative enhances tourism appeal, linking the seaside and city. Additionally, restoration of historic squares aims to preserve heritage and reinforce Agadir’s attractiveness.

Agadir is preparing to transform one of its emblematic spaces thanks to an ambitious urban renovation project. The renovation of Place Al Amal, for nearly 20 MDH, promises to change the face of this central place in the renaissance city which is the scene of various royal receptions, events and festivals.

The works, which are expected to last around six months, with delivery starting in September 2025, encompass a wide range of interventions. This is not just a cosmetic lick of paint, but a complete overhaul of the infrastructure and layout of the square, the development of which has been expected since the launch of the Agadir Urban Development Programme (PDU) 2020-2024.

The work will include, among other things, preparatory works as well as earthworks, civil engineering in addition to the drinking water supply, fire protection and planting work.

Added to this are the floor coverings, construction work, structural work, false ceilings and public lighting.

Strengthening the Agadir attractiveness

The objective is to create a more attractive and more functional recreational public space, since the facelift of Place Al Amal represents a significant investment for the future of Agadir given the reputation of this public place.

This project should strengthen the attractiveness of the city, especially from a tourist point of view, given that the square is a link between the tourist and seaside area and the new city.

Also, residents will be able to enjoy a redeveloped and adapted space. The construction site of Place Al Amal is part of the continuity of the development of public squares recently launched.

Valorization of architectural heritage

Let us recall that the program of the 65th anniversary of the reconstruction of Agadir was marked by the launch of the development of squares commemorating the 1960 earthquake. An envelope of 16.8 MDH was mobilized for this purpose. The development works were officially awarded by the local development company (SDL) Agadir Souss-Massa Aménagement since February 11th.

In detail, the works concern the Rialto cinema square, and the Crown Prince square, in addition to the town hall square, opposite the municipality and the central market. This will allow these spaces to be highlighted after the various degradations they have suffered.

The enhancement of the city’s architectural heritage should consolidate the attractiveness of the Agadir destination. In 2024, more than 1.377 million tourist arrivals were recorded, generating some 5.9 million overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments.
