Agadir Tourism Soars in Early 2025 with Double-Digit Growth, but Ramadan May Slow Momentum
Agadir’s tourism sector saw double-digit growth in early 2025, with January arrivals rising 13.55% from 2024 and 38.22% from 2019. Overnight stays grew despite a 6.27% bed capacity drop. The English market led, surpassing national and French visitors. However, Ramadan in March may impact tourism. Occupancy reached 57.88%, continuing 2024’s strong performance.

The Agadir destination begins the 2025 financial year with a double-digit growth. Total arrivals in classified tourist accommodation establishments recorded 104,840 tourists in January 2025 compared to 92,333 in January 2024 and 75,852 in January 2019. The observation is the same for overnight stays which showed an increase, despite the drop in bed capacity of 6.27% between 2019 and 2025, generating 439,482 overnight stays in January 2025 compared to 386,513 and 367,878 overnight stays during the same period of 2024 and 2019.
As the tourism sector closed the year 2024 by generating more than 1.377 million arrivals and 5.914 million overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments in Agadir, including the Taghazout and Imi Ouaddar resorts, the destination is entering the 2025 financial year with a double-digit growth.
And this, even if this dynamic will be affected during the month of March and even before (stopping alcohol consumption 40 days before Ramadan devoid of any religious and/or scientific basis) by the effect of this month which will penalize, once again, tourist activity during this period.
Indeed, the month of fasting will begin on Sunday March 2, 2025, which will penalize a part of the tourist attendance, essentially that of national flows in hotels, but also restaurants and bars (for foreign flows) due to the closure during this period of these places for scheduled renovation or development work.
Referring to the analysis of the tourist situation for the month of January 2025, total arrivals in classified tourist accommodation establishments recorded an increase of 13.55% compared to January 2024 and an increase of 38.22% compared to January 2019.
As a result, the number of arrivals increased from 75,852 in January 2019 to 92,333 in January 2024 and to 104,840 in January 2025.
Overnight stays also up thanks to the English tourists
The same observation is made for total overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments. During the month of January 2025, they also recorded an increase of 13.70% compared to January 2024 and an increase of 19.46% compared to 2019, despite the drop in bed capacity of 6.27% between 2019 and 2025, from 32,585 to 30,542 due to the closure of several hotels, either for renovation, development or repair work or cessation of activity.
In figures, overnight stays reached 439,482 overnight stays in January 2025 compared to 386,513 and 367,878 overnight stays during the same period of 2024 and 2019, the reference year before covid. Referring to the shares of the main source markets in terms of arrivals and overnight stays, the economic analysis during the beginning of this year confirmed the trend of recovery of the English market which was placed at the top of the overnight stays.
Currently the second largest tourist clientele within the Agadir destination after national and French flows, the English market performed well, once again at the beginning of this year on the Agadir destination, and boosted attendance thanks to air routes.
As a result, these flows occupy the first place on the podium of tourist overnight stays with 25,155 tourists having generated 130,573 overnight stays in January 2025 against 15,392 arrivals and 84,427 overnight stays during January 2024. For national flows, they began a new decline during this month, going from 30,810 in January 2024 to 27,596 in January 2025 while overnight stays went from 71,132 to 63,802 in comparison with the same periods.
For the French market, it continues its momentum, going from 16,531 to 19,407 arrivals between January 2024 and 2025, while overnight stays have evolved from 93,113 to 99,761. Furthermore, the German market continues its decline in terms of both arrivals and overnight stays, with other flows that could boost attendance.
Occupancy rate in Agadir: 57.88% in January 2025
As for the average occupancy rate, it recorded in the classified hotels of the city of Agadir an increase of 10.07% compared to January 2024 and an increase of 20.52 compared to 2019, rising in January 2025 to 57.88% against 48.02% in 2019 and 52.58% in 2024.
As a reminder, the sector closed the year 2024 by generating more than 1.377 million arrivals and 5.914 million overnight stays. This increase was driven by a double-digit increase in arrivals, according to the cumulative total for the whole of 2024, i.e. an increase of 15.76% compared to the 2019/2024 financial year and 13.84% compared to the 2023/2024 seasons. In value, arrivals increased from 1.190 million tourists in 2019 to 1.210 million in 2023 before reaching 1.377 million in 2024 with a gain of 167,442 tourists.
Regarding total overnight stays, they recorded in classified tourist accommodation establishments a growth of 17.79% compared to 2023 and an increase of 9.78% compared to 2019. This development is the result of an increase of 5.387 million overnight stays in 2019 and 5.020 million in 2023 before this volume reaches 5.914 million overnight stays during the 12 months of the year 2024, i.e. an annual gain of 893,381 overnight stays.
