Bitcoin Ordinals: New Upgrade Enables Video Games on Blockchain

As the community waits for the reaction to the new ordinals upgrade, controversial discussions are to be expected. The potential for recursive ordinals to revolutionize the possibilities within Bitcoin is undeniable, and it remains to be seen how this development will shape the future of the cryptocurrency. The Ordinals community envisions a future where complex 3D video games can be fully functional on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Bitcoin Ordinals Inscriptions have recently created a lot of hype and divided the BTC community. The latest upgrade, known as Recursive Inscriptions, is expected to be just as controversial. This upgrade will allow Inscriptions to indirectly exceed the block storage limit of 4 MB.

Charlie Spears from Luxor announced on Twitter that Casey Rodarmor, the mastermind behind Ordinal, has merged Recursion, signaling the beginning of a new era. The concept is similar to BRC721, where the size of individual ordinals does not exceed 4 MB, but the combined ordinals can now exceed that limit.

The introduction of recursive ordinals brings notable changes to Bitcoin. Earlier this year, the ordinals protocol allowed full inscription of any file in the chain if it was smaller than 4 MB. However, ordinals could not reference or interact with each other.

Recursive ordinals overcome this limitation. Leonidas.og, a prominent Ordinals member on Twitter, explained that ordinals can now use a special syntax to request the contents of other ordinals.

This opens up significant possibilities, as proponents of Bitcoin Ordinals noted

For example, instead of labeling 10,000 JPEG files individually for a PFP (profile picture) collection, which would be costly, it would be possible to label the 200 features in the collection and then programmatically create 10,000 additional labels that reference those features to represent images. This approach would have saved over a million dollars in transaction fees for projects like Bitcoin Apes.

In addition, Recursive Inscription allows 3D art to be incorporated into the blockchain, further expanding the possibilities. Moreover, complex applications can now upload code packages to the blockchain. OrdinalHub suggests that even the BTC Core client, which was previously too large to store due to block size limitations, can now be split into multiple ordinals with a front end that calls the required code from other ordinals. This means running Bitcoin on Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin Ordinals community envisions a future where complex 3D video games can be fully functional on the Bitcoin blockchain. Developers can split games into multiple ordinals with different pieces of code and display them in a single ordinal. This transformation capability essentially creates an internal internet within Bitcoin where each file can request data from others.

As the community waits for the reaction to the new ordinals upgrade, controversial discussions are to be expected. The potential for recursive ordinals to revolutionize the possibilities within Bitcoin is undeniable, and it remains to be seen how this development will shape the future of the cryptocurrency.
