Italian Government Amendment on Cananbis Passes: 11,000 Jobs at Risk

An approved amendment equates light cannabis with non-light cannabis, threatening thousands of jobs in Italy’s hemp sector. Opposition parties, including M5S and Democrats, criticize the government’s hasty, repressive measures, accusing it of silencing dissent. The Meloni government faces backlash for dismantling an Italian industry with 11,000 jobs, as the League withdraws other controversial proposals.

Long session in the Constitutional Affairs and Justice Committees of the Chamber that worked all night and are still meeting to close the examination of the security bill. Despite the time constraints, numerous amendments are still missing and they are proceeding indefinitely.

Among the proposed amendments approved is also the crackdown on light cannabis that, in fact, equates it to non-light cannabis. The League’s proposal to ban the image of the hemp plant for advertising purposes was withdrawn. This is, comments Riccardo Magi, a “severe blow to the cannabis sector that sees thousands of workers and a completely Italian supply chain.”

The opposition protests in the commission are harsh for the forced stages on a measure that does not have the urgency of a decree

“From the time constraints we move on to silencing the opposition – said Valentina D’Orso and Alfonso Colucci, M5s group leaders in the commission after a further acceleration decided by the presidencies – so overnight the majority approves its repressive and liberticidal provisions of the security bill under cover of darkness and without the ‘annoyance’ of the opposition that nails them to their inadequacy. A new disgrace signed by FdI, Lega and FI.”

A “dangerous precedent” also for the Dems. During the night – it is reported – the announced reformulation of the majority and opposition amendments that provide that police officers can wear bodycams also arrived. We are moving towards a non-stop session until the Chamber meeting scheduled for 9.

The cannabis sector in Italy under threat

“The Meloni government has just killed the light cannabis sector in the country: in the marathon session tonight in the House committee, the amendment to the security bill that equates light cannabis to that with THC was approved. The Meloni government, in the grip of ideological fury, is canceling an all-Italian supply chain, 11 thousand jobs. And they also think they have fought against drugs…” The secretary of Più Europa Riccardo Magi wrote this on X.

The League – according to reports – has withdrawn some amendments. Among others, those on the introduction of the crime of Islamic fundamentalism, on sermons only in Italian and on chemical castration for rapists.
