A Town in Teruel Raises Funds to Save an 18th-Century Church Pipe Organ
The 18th-century church organ in Cabra de Mora, built by Vicente Sospedra, is a unique piece in the Teruel region, surviving the Spanish Civil War. Unplayed for over 80 years, it is now in disrepair. A crowdfunding campaign aims to raise €20,000 (€30,000 needed) by September 24 to restore it for concerts and events.
The Town Council, the Parish of San Miguel and the Abad Zapater Association of the town of Cabra de Mora in Teruel have joined forces, together with the heritage organisation Hispania Nostra, to raise the funds to begin the restoration of the town church, which dates back to 1788.
The church was built by Vicente Sospedra in 1788 and has construction characteristics that make it special and representative of Aragonese organ building, according to the Abad Zapater Association.
It is therefore a unique piece in the Teruel region of Gúdar-Javalambre, as most of these organs disappeared or were burnt during the Spanish Civil War. The one in Cabra de Mora has not been played for more than 80 years, but the town feels “obliged to restore it and make it heard again.”

At the moment, it is covered in dust and it is noticeable that pipes are missing and others are scattered or broken inside. In addition, the mechanisms do not work, the air ducts are leaking, the bellows are damaged, and it is infested with woodworm.
However, the good news is that reports indicate that it is feasible to restore it and make it work again, for example, for classical music concerts, such as the festival held in the village in August, organist seminars, guided school tours and in the ceremonies themselves.
It is thus possible to sponsor an organ pipe, a set of keys or the bellows. The promoters of the crowdfunding also point out that a contribution of up to 250 euros is eligible for an 80% tax relief.
Fundraising is open until September 24th, with the minimum goal of raising 20,000 euros, although they estimate they need 30,000 to undertake the restoration.
