Climate Losses Drive New Risk Training in Agriculture Led by Cineas and Asnacodi Italia
Climate change is causing major financial losses and supply-chain instability in agriculture, with Italy facing 9 billion in damages in 2024. New training like Agririsk Management aims to shift from reactive insurance to prevention, equipping professionals to handle systemic risks, protect margins, improve resilience, and support long-term investment and operational continuity across the agricultural sector.
Climate change is increasingly impacting agricultural companies’ finances and the stability of supply chains. With damages estimated at €9 billion in 2024 alone, prevention is becoming a key issue, and the Agririsk Management course is being launched to train risk management professionals in the agricultural sector.
In 2024, Italian agriculture suffered a record climate cost of approximately €9 billion
That includes damage from drought, storms, hailstorms, and other extreme weather conditions, according to Coldiretti’s analysis of ESWD data. On average, more than 10 extreme weather events occurred per day, a significant increase compared to previous years and a trend that has seen these events quadruple in a decade.
These numbers are not mere statistics but signals of an integrated crisis that combines climate change, supply chain vulnerability, and pressure on agricultural businesses’ balance sheets, transforming climate risk into a determining factor for the sector’s economic and financial sustainability. Fluctuations in production stocks, declines in output, and damage to infrastructure not only reduce added value, but also erode companies’ investment capacity and compromise the operational continuity of production systems.
“In a situation like this,” explained Emanuele Salvador, professor at Cineas, a university consortium founded by the Polytechnic University of Milan and specialized in promoting risk culture, “risk management approached in a sectoral or reactive manner is no longer sufficient and can no longer guarantee the survival of businesses.
Climate change is affecting all agricultural sectors
The agricultural sector, like many others, is increasingly exposed to systemic and interconnected risks, exacerbated by extreme weather events, health crises, market instability, and regulatory changes. Addressing these challenges requires transversal skills, analytical capabilities, and agile decision-making tools capable of supporting and guiding all the stakeholders involved: agricultural businesses, intermediaries, insurance companies, and public administrations.
This is why, with the valuable support of Ansacodi, we have developed the specialized Agririsk Management course, designed for those working in the sector who require a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of risk dynamics in agriculture.”
Data from ISMEA and ASNACODI highlight how the pressure on farmers’ margins has become unsustainable: rising climate risks are making it increasingly difficult to effectively use tools such as insurance policies and mutual funds (e.g., AgriCat), while a large portion of losses remain uncovered , highlighting a significant gap between risk exposure and current coverage. This situation has direct implications for companies’ cash flows, their ability to access credit, and investors’ assessment of risk in the medium to long term.
According to Andrea Berti, president of Asnacodi Italia, a profound overhaul of the approach is needed: “We need to move from a purely compensatory risk management approach to a preventative one. It’s not just about insuring a piece of land, but about mapping the threats and fully understanding the tools available. Specialized training therefore becomes an investment in business resilience, because a trained professional can transform a potential cost into a competitive opportunity.”
Hence the Agririsk Management course, scheduled for March 3rd to May 13th, 2026, with the aim of bridging the gap between technical agricultural production skills and strategic risk management capabilities. Accredited by the National College of Agricultural Experts and Graduate Agricultural Experts, the course is aimed at consultants, insurance intermediaries, experts, defense consortium officials, company managers, and public administrators, offering tools to address climate risks, health emergencies, and market complexity.
The program combines technical lessons with real-world case studies and a final business game to test acquired skills, placing training at the heart of a new risk management culture.
