Ecological Transition: What Has Changed for Boilers in the European Directive on Green Homes

Energy Performance of Buildings Directive is the green homes directive that sets important goals for the construction and real estate sector: 2050 is the most relevant date because by mid-century buildings will have to reach zero emissions objectives. The path will not be easy because 85% of buildings in the European Union were built before 2000 and of this very large majority, 75% have poor energy performance.

However, until the last modification, the fear was that the stages indicated in the text were too tight and not sustainable in terms of conversion to new models, especially as regards the Italian market.

The Assothermica association therefore appreciated the fact that the phase-out of fossil fuels in boilers and heating systems has been moved to 2040 (originally the deadline was set for 2035). By that date, the expectations are that renewable sources such as biomethane or green hydrogen will be more available in distribution networks.

Again according to Assothermica «even hybrid devices (reduced power heat pumps coupled ‘factory made’ to a condensing boiler approved for green gas mixtures) and gas heat pumps will have a central role, being fully integrated into the park Italian construction.”

As regards APEs (i.e. energy performance certificates), class A0 will be introduced for zero-emission buildings. However, returning to the issue of boilers, the green homes directive establishes that from 2025 member countries will no longer be able to provide incentives for autonomous fossil fuel boilers and only hybrid heating systems will be eligible for subsidies. Fossil fuel boilers will be phased out by 2040.
