Scientifically Verified F1 Hybrids Set New Benchmark for Indoor Cannabis Yield and Consistency
CRIC Labs confirmed indoor cannabis yields of 1.8 kilograms per square meter in 69 days using Orion F1 and Medusa F1 hybrids. Uniform growth improved light use, stability, and predictability. Researchers say results are achievable beyond large facilities. True F1 genetics enhance consistency, efficiency, and repeatability, with new photoperiodic hybrids expanding flexible cultivation options worldwide.
1.8 kilograms of cannabis per square meter – and all in just 69 days from seed. What long sounded like a marketing promise has now been scientifically confirmed under controlled conditions.
A recent indoor study by CRIC Labs in Montreal, conducted in cooperation with Royal Queen Seeds (RQS), sets new standards for yield, consistency, and reproducibility in modern cannabis cultivation. The experiment focused on two so-called true F1 hybrid cannabis varieties: Orion F1 and Medusa F1. Cultivation took place under strictly defined indoor parameters at CRIC’s research facility – with a planting density of 5.4 plants per square meter and a fully timed 69-day cycle, including a shortened vegetative phase and synchronized flowering.
Consistency as a driver of profitability
The result: around 1,800 grams per square meter – but almost more remarkable was the extreme uniformity of the stand . The plants developed a consistent crown structure across the entire cultivation area. According to the researchers, this significantly reduced the need for individual adjustments to light and irrigation. In practice, a homogeneous canopy means:
even light distribution
more stable environmental parameters
less stress for the plants
more predictable yieldsIn short: less fine-tuning, more control.
No record just for large plants
Particularly interesting is the assessment by Simon Charette , who oversaw the project. He clarifies that these results are not exclusively reserved for large commercial plants:”Even on a small scale – with a grower who understands his plants and their environment – I believe this is absolutely achievable.”
This study underlines a central tenet of modern breeding: stable, uniform genetics increases the likelihood of high performance , even outside of highly automated large-scale operations.
Why true F1 hybrids are becoming increasingly relevant
RQS sees the results as confirmation of why true F1 hybrids are becoming increasingly important in indoor cultivation. They combine:
high growth rate
genetic stability
uniform plant structure
Robust performance across various mounting styles
For growers, this means: greater repeatability from run to run , fewer outliers in the crop, and overall more efficient use of space, time, and energy.
Next step: photoperiodic F1 hybrids
In line with the CRIC study, RQS has also introduced new photoperiodic F1 hybrid varieties . These follow the same True F1 approach but offer more flexibility in terms of growing season and training techniques – without sacrificing the advantages of uniform structure and predictable performance.
Further details and data sets from the CRIC trial are available upon request, according to RQS. One thing is already clear: F1 hybrid genetics could prove to be one of the key levers for the next level of efficiency in indoor cannabis cultivation.
