FACUA Rallies Public Support After Historic Government Funding Cut

FACUA surpassed 1,000 donations in 10 days after launching a crowdfunding campaign responding to major government funding cuts. Over €43,000 was raised from individuals only. The cuts, totaling 29% this year, threaten its consumer protection work and support for more than 100 staff. Public donations are now vital to sustain its fight against fraud and corporate abuse across Spain.

FACUA-Consumers in Action has exceeded 1,000 donations in the first 10 days of the crowdfunding campaign it launched after the brutal cut applied by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to the aid it grants to consumer associations for the fight against fraud.

Since the campaign began on December 30, the association has already received more than €43,000 in donations. By Friday morning, 1,074 people had participated. All of them are individuals, as FACUA points out in the video and on its website promoting the initiative that, unlike other consumer associations, it does not accept money from companies.

FACUA: The biggest cut in history

In the last year, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has cut funding to FACUA by €174,000. This is the largest cut in its history, representing a staggering 29% reduction, in addition to the 8% cut already applied in the previous year.

These cuts, and those that may come in the future from this or other governments, make consumer financial support especially necessary, warns FACUA. This support is invaluable for maintaining its level of activity in developing initiatives to defend consumers and, ultimately, to improve people’s lives. It is essential for sustaining a structure that includes more than 100 professionals working at FACUA and its regional associations throughout Spain.

More than one hundred workers

Donations, along with the membership fees paid by its full members, are essential for FACUA to continue helping consumers against fraud by banks, electricity companies, telephone companies, insurance companies, airlines, supermarkets…

This support is also essential for FACUA to continue its 45-year fight against abuses by companies and governments. This includes combating breaches of advertising and contractual commitments, unfair terms, the lack of effective controls and penalties for those who break the law, politicians who turn a blind eye to fraud, and those who obstruct legislative improvements or pass laws dictated by corporations.

To help FACUA, you can make your donation via Bizum (select “Donate to NGOs” and enter the code 13218), by transfer to account.
