This week, I wanna kick off the news with a quick update about a story we did last week.
For those who missed it, the story was about “prediction markets”. edition.
Here’s a quick recap of what we covered:

One of those details I do want to cover here, however, was Robinhood’s foray into the whole scene.
Another of those details was how the regulatory environment was a bit… hazy… which leads me into the quick update I wanted to do.
Here’s the headline, straight from Reuters:

Long story short — Robinhood probably isn’t the best way to take advantage of this trend as an affiliate. And not just because of the low commissions, like we mentioned last week. Now, you’ve also got the ‘legal’ threats coming that could well cut the whole thing short.
So yeah, another win for the sportsbook angle… and another chance to plug the Gambling Affiliation Affiliate Program… because why not?

Oh, and speaking of March Madness (well, basketball) and sports betting, time to cue this week’s story.
NBA Owners to Review Proposed European League
Because… what could possibly go wrong…?

Just kidding.
Anyway, the plan is to create a new pro basketball league in Europe in some sort of partnership with the Fédération Internationale de Basketball.
Who the hell’s that?
Great question.
They’re also known as FIBA, which is kinda like NBA, but international.
As for the league structure, it’ll look a little like this:
- 8-10 franchises based around major Euro cities (Paris, Rome, London, etc.)
- A “semi-open” model that leaves 4 slots open for the top EuroLeague teams.
As for why the NBA woud wanna do that, the answer is simple.
It’s the same reason you’re here.
Money.

Back to the news…
So since we’re on the topic of money, here’s a quick look at the business side of all this Euro NBA stuff:
- NBA reckons franchises will sell for at least $500 million each.
- The NBA would think that since they’ll own 50% equity in each franchise.
- As for who’s gonna stump up the cash for the other 50% of one of these franchises… well, that’d be sovereign wealth funds, private equity (duh), HNIs… and maybe some existing European basketball clubs.
- Also, the whole shebang could be worth about $3 billion per year, which isn’t exactly chump change.
For now, however, all of this is hypothetical. As of this moment, there’s still no definitive decision about whether the whole thing goes ahead or not.
In fact, there isn’t even a vote scheduled at this point. All we know is that the NBA Board of Governors is supposedly reviewing the plan this week.
So why am I bringing the story up now?
Glad you asked.
The main reason I wanted to discuss this new Euro NBA thing was to ask the question “why”?
Why does the NBA want to expand into Europe… apart from the obvious…

Well, there might be a few good reasons. And that’s what I really wanted to get into.
First, while it’s not exactly known as the home of Basketball, the sport’s actually kinda popular in Europe. Especially in recent times.
In fact, according to a Sportcal report, a whopping 47% of “urban” Europeans identify as “basketball interested”. To quote from the report, “This translates to 41,8 million people, of whom 31,98 million described themselves as specifically interested in EuroLeague.”
But it’s not just the EuroLeague, either.
Here are a few fun facts that I pulled up from an NBA press release recapping the 2023-24 season in the region:
- The NBA saw over 700 million views across its social media channels from Europe alone (which is more than any other pro U.S. sports league).
- Viewership of NBA Saturdays and Sundays in Spain (Movistar) increased by 48% year-over-year.
- Total watch time on NBA’s European YouTube channel shot up by 220% year-over-year.
- Social media followers on various European NBA accounts increased by 50% year-over-year.
- NBA App viewership went up by 39% year-over-year.
Kinda getting an idea about why the NBA’s all of a sudden having some pretty big ambitions for Europe?
There are also plenty of other stats that show basketball’s not exactly small time in the EU as well.
For example, did you know that Germany has over 200,000 registered basketball players?
And Germany’s not alone either. Just across the border, France has become a bit of an internationally renowned powerhouse for basketball talent. In fact, there’s apparently a total of 53 NBA players who’ve come from France.
Also, each time the NBA hosts a game in France, the games sell out in 24 hours.
Oh, and how could we forget the Slavs?

Apparently, the Slavs love basketball. Slovenia, for example, has the highest NBA search interest in Europe — 79,084 searches per 100,000 people.
Yep, you read that right. Apparently 79% of the population in Slovenia has searched for the NBA.
Oh, and there are plenty more big numbers (and not just from the Slavs) in the article I just linked to (just in case you’re interested).
Spain’s another example, with 48,479 searches per 100,000 people. (The article also says Basketball is the country’s second most popular sport!)
So I guess that sorta helps us understand why Europe’s suddenly become such a major focus for the NBA.
Takeaway
Alright, so you’ve hopefully gotten the point. Basketball’s kinda a bigger thing in Europe than I think most of us expected.
So now the question is, where to from here?
Well, if you wanna be a “proactive” affiliate and get ahead of the curve, I guess you could always start building out some sort of a “European NBA” type presence somewhere, whether that be SEO, Social, or whatever.
That way, when it finally drops on the continent, you’re already ahead of the curve.
Alternatively, you could just try and beat the NBA to the punch. That is, you could start making money off of Euro basketball today.
But where do you start?
Well, a great place to start would be to go take a look at that first SportCal report I pulled up. You know, the one about how 47% of “urban” Europeans like basketball. (Here’s the link again.)
That report’s got plenty of solid demographic information you can use to figure something out.
For example, here’s a “profile” for the “average” European Basketball fan:
- Is likely younger.
- Is probably an active sports participant.
- Is possibly a student.
- Typically has a higher income than the general population (nice to know if we’re gonna be targeting them as affiliates).
Also, while I don’t have any specific data for basketball betting in Europe, I did find a couple of interesting things. For example, there’s this report, which says:
- In 2023, the European sports betting market (as a whole) was valued at $33.75 billion.
- Basketball is a significant contributor to this, and “is anticipated to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period.”
So, while we don’t have an exact number, I guess we can at least say “it’s certainly not insignificant.”
Also, in case you missed it, FYI: the main Basketball action in Europe is centered around the EuroLeague.

So now you know the dollars involved (a lot), the people spending them (urban kids) and the leagues involved (NBA, EuroLeague), I guess you’ve got everything you need to get out there and start promoting a good sportsbook to them.
As for choosing a good sportsbook to promote… well, why choose when you’ve got the Gambling Affiliation Affiliates Program?
