Pablo Iglesias Crowdfunds to Expand Taberna Garibaldi, Sparking Political Clash

Pablo Iglesias launched a crowdfunding campaign seeking €146,995 to relocate Taberna Garibaldi to a larger venue for expanded cultural events. Funds cover licensing, equipment, and renovations. Announced during his book launch, the initiative sparked political tension with Madrid’s mayor, Almeida, who mocked the effort, calling it “passing the hat” in response to Iglesias’ criticism.

Pablo Iglesias, former vice president of the government and founder of Podemos, has launched a crowdfunding campaign with his partners Carlos Ávila and Sebastián Fiorilli to raise almost €147,000 to move his Taberna Garibaldi to a larger location to “host more cultural initiatives.”

Iglesias announced this Tuesday at the presentation of his new book, “Enemigos íntimos,” which took place at the current location of the Taberna Garibaldi, as he did not have authorization from Madrid City Council to hold it in a cultural center in Vallecas.

Specifically, the request (made through the Goteo platform) is for €146,995 for “a larger space to house a new Taberna Garibaldi in the center of Madrid.” The text states that this requires obtaining a new license: “This way, we will be able to host more political and cultural events and initiatives,” said Pablo Iglesias.

The majority of the money, 120,000 euros, would be used to purchase a new bar license . In addition, 17,996 euros are being requested to equip the premises “for the type of cultural activities we carry out” and an additional 9,000 euros for renovations to get it up and running

“The Garibaldi has been too small for us for some time now. We want a larger space that will allow us to expand the space’s activities and accommodate more people,” the application states, detailing that “we want to host more book presentations, singer-songwriter concerts, debates, theater, exhibitions, and all kinds of cultural activities. For that, we need a larger space than the current one,” said Pablo Iglesias.

People who wish to make contributions to Pablo Iglesias crowdfunding can choose from several amounts and rewards:

With 25 euros, the donor will receive a thank you email.
With 50 euros, the donor will receive a photograph of the founders as a thank you.
With 150 euros, the donor will receive a thank-you video.
With 250 euros, the donor will receive a video of the founders singing.

Almeida: “The revolution was about passing the hat.”

The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has felt challenged by Pablo Iglesias (who called him a ‘fascist’ in a post on X in which he presented crowdfunding) and has been quite harsh with the former vice president of the Government.

Thus, in his X profile, Almeida responded with a phrase, “The revolution was passing the hat,” in reference to the request from Iglesias and his partners to expand the Garibaldi Tavern.
