New Global Survey Shows Growing Cannabis Acceptance in Poland

The American research institute Pew Research Center has published a new report. The document is dated March 5th, 2026.Analysts examined attitudes toward morality in 25 countries around the world. The results from Poland bring great news for cannabis enthusiasts.

Statistics show a very clear shift in Polish society. According to hard data, 43% of adult Poles consider cannabis morally unacceptable. This means that as many as 57% ofthe Polish society accepts cannabis or sees no ethical problem with it.

Pew Research: Cannabis is now morally acceptable

Poland, with 43% of the opposition, is safely in the middle of the global rankings. Where in the world is cannabis least controversial?

According to the Pew Research, Canada is the clear leader in tolerance. In this country, only 19% of adults disapprove of cannabis.In the United States, opposition is 23%. In Australia, only 24% of citizens have a problem with cannabis, and in Germany, 25%.

Completely different moods prevail in Asian and African countries. The global outsider is Indonesia, where cannabis is condemned by as many as 91% of respondents. Nigeria (83%) and Türkiye (82%) offer slightly less resistance..

Education builds acceptance for cannabis in Poland

Attitudes toward cannabis in Poland are strongly linked to education. The Pew Reasearch report highlights a significant difference in views.

Among Poles with higher education, opposition to cannabis is only 29%. The situation is completely different in the lower educated group. In this group, as many as 51% of people condemn cannabis. This represents a difference of as much as 22 percentage points. Education significantly reduces the fear of drugs.

Poles condemn betrayal and gambling much more strongly

Most Poles accept cannabis but judge other behaviors harshly. The greatest evil for Poles is definitely adultery. According to the Pew research, as many as 80% of Poles consider infidelity to be completely unacceptable.

Gambling is strongly condemned by 41% of respondents in Poland. The biggest opponents of gambling in the world are Indonesians (89% opposition). In Australia, however, only 33% of people disapprove of gambling.

Pornography is rejected by 39% of Polish society. Traditionally, Poles are most lenient towards alcohol. Only 22% of Poles consider drinking alcohol to be immoral.

World moral rankings

The Pew Research Center report also shows leaders in other moral categories.Homosexuality still evokes extreme emotions around the world. In Nigeria, 96% of citizens condemn it, and in Indonesia, 93%. The world leaders in acceptance are Sweden and Germany. In these two countries, only 5% of the population considers homosexuality wrong. In Poland, this percentage is currently 28%..

Polish moral norms are constantly relaxing. This clearly illustrates the attitude towards divorce.In 2013, 22% of Poles disapproved of divorce. Now that percentage has dropped to just 16%. Nigeria is currently the most strict on divorce (55% opposed).

Only 11% of respondents in Poland criticize contraception. The world leader in acceptance in this area is Sweden, where opposition is a record 1%.

Poles trust their neighbors according to the same Pew Research

The researchers asked one very unusual question in the Pew Research report. They asked people for their overall assessment of the morality of their compatriots. The results turned out to be quite a surprise.

Poles rate their neighbors very highly. As many as 70% of respondents in Poland believe that other citizens have good moral principles. Only 28% of Poles think negatively of their compatriots. Canadians think most highly of their fellow countrymen (92% positive ratings).

Americans approach it completely differently. The United States is the only country in the world surveyed where a majority of its citizens think negatively of their neighbors. 53% of Americans believe their countrymen have poor ethics.
