Poland Proposes Cannabis Decriminalization: 15 Grams and One Plant Without Penalties
Poland’s Centre parliamentary group proposed a bill to decriminalize cannabis, allowing possession of up to 15 grams and one homegrown plant without penalties. Supporters argue current laws are unjust, costly, and ineffective. The proposal aims to reduce prosecutions, save public funds, and improve safety. Its fate depends on whether parliament debates it.
The Centre parliamentary group has submitted a new bill to the Sejm (lower house of parliament). It concerns cannabis. Politicians want to eliminate penalties for possession of small amounts of the herb. The main slogan is: 15 grams, one bush, and no penalties. What exactly does this bill propose?
On Friday, March 27th, 2026, a new document was submitted to the Sejm by the Centrum Club. The bill proposes an important change for cannabis users in Poland. This is known as decriminalization.
What does decriminalizing cannabis mean?
Cannabis decriminalization isn’t the same as full legalization. However, it does mean the abolition of criminal penalties. The new draft law allows for two things:
you can have up to 15 grams of cannabis on you for personal use,
you can grow one cannabis plant in your home.
MP Ryszard Petru explains this idea very clearly, emphasizing that this isn’t drug promotion. It’s simply about not penalizing people for using small amounts of weed.
Why do MPs want to change the cannabis law?
Politicians cite three main reasons. First, it’s about justice. MP Ewa Szymanowska notes a certain absurdity. Currently, possession of a small amount of cannabis carries a three-year prison sentence. The same penalty applies for participating in a violent fight or driving under the influence of alcohol. This law is destroying the lives of many young people.
In Poland, a few grams of cannabis can result in up to 3 years in prison – the same as participating in a fight.
This doesn’t increase safety. It destroys lives.
The Center Parliamentary Club’s project:
✔ up to 15g for personal use – no crime
✔ 1 plant – legal at home
Secondly, it’s about state money. MP Aleksandra Leo provides important figures. Police and courts waste time prosecuting people with a single joint . These cases are often dismissed. This costs the state budget several hundred million złoty annually. Politicians want to spend this money more wisely. They prefer to allocate it to treatment and prevention.
Third, it’s about safety. Many people today buy cannabis on the black market. They often don’t know exactly what they’re smoking. The herb can be contaminated with chemicals. Growing your own or from a legal source offers greater security and health.
A chance for a historic vote
Now it’s up to the Speaker of the Sejm to make the final decision. In Poland, many bills end up in the Sejm’s “freezebox.” This means that members of parliament never debate them.
However, if the Centrum Club’s project isn’t frozen, a breakthrough awaits us. The first truly historic vote on the decriminalization of cannabis in Poland will take place.
