S’Obrador Project: Crowdfunding to Raise 18,800 Euros for a Cooking Pot

S’Obrador, a facility crucial to producing 250,000 units of preserves since 2019, launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise €18,800 for a new industrial pot. The pot, vital for scaling production, costs €33,000, half funded by public grants. The initiative supports local, organic farming in Mallorca, aiming to democratize access to affordable, sustainable products.

S'Obrador

S’Obrador is a native project of the Associació de la Producció Agrària Ecològica de Mallorca ( APAEMA ) dedicated to the production of agri-food products by the island’s organic farmers. It is an innovative system aimed at producers, being the only collective kitchen in the Balearic Islands.

Since its creation in 2019, this facility has been key to the manufacture of some 250,000 units of preserves, according to data shared by the entity itself. For this reason, in order to achieve financial solidity, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Goteo platform.

Their project, “Una marmita per a S’Obrador,” aims to raise 18,800 euros to finance the purchase of a new industrial pot

The machine is worth 33,000 euros, and 50% has been obtained through grants from public entities. After two years with an inoperative pot, the team at the workshop is in a difficult situation , as the expenses exceed the income generated. For this reason, they need to replace the pot , which has certain technical characteristics that allow the recipes to be made on a larger scale. “The key to reversing this situation is to acquire a new pot,” says Miquel Coll, president of APAEMA.

With the help of this campaign, the production team aims to continue cooking “the transition towards a greener and fairer Mallorca.” Within S’Obrador, organic products of local origin are prepared using surplus and damaged food from small producers. Within the crowdfunding, there are different types of participation from the minimum of 10 euros to 950 euros. In exchange for the contribution, rewards are offered such as products and culinary experiences in the kitchens of S’Obrador.

The association claims that with the necessary technology they are capable of establishing this business model that allows them to empower once again “the economic, social and solidarity fabric” in the Mallorcan agricultural sector. In the kitchen, located in Binisalem, Nofre Fullana is dedicated to coordinating with APAEMA. “We give added value to farmers,” he said. From the workshop they offer two types of services: one in which the farmer produces for his own distribution and another under his own license, in which they market their recipes with the S’Obrador brand.

The new cooking pot will reduce the price of the final product in order to democratise access to local and organic products, including preserves, jams, spreads, sauces, vegetable creams, juices, and others.

The coordinator of the S’Obrador project pointed out that “it is not just a kitchen, it is a place of innovation where new recipes are created to make the most of Mallorcan agricultural products.” He also encourages the population to collaborate since, “in addition to lending a hand to an innovative project, they help to preserve the Island.”
