Terradepth and Terna: Underwater Drone to Inspect the Seabed
Terna’s “Odisseo” project, tested near Casamicciola Terme, employs “Gavia” with advanced sensors for network innovation. Terna’s 10-year plan prioritizes marine cable investments for efficiency and resilience. Among the large marine infrastructure projects carried out by Terna are the “Tyrrhenian Link”, the “Adriatic Link”, and “Elmed”
An experimental project for the application of an underwater drone in seabed inspection activities is the one carried out by the US startup Terradepth in collaboration with Terna. “Odisseo” is the name of the initiative starring “Gavia”, a drone designed by the US capable of diving to great sea depths.
The startup specialized in the collection and dissemination of ocean data together with Terna has commissioned Gavia to explore the seabed in order to subsequently build important infrastructures while respecting the aquatic environment that surrounds us.

Terradepth project made in collaboration with Terna
A first experimental test of the “Odisseo” project took place off the port of Casamicciola Terme, on the island of Ischia. During the investigation, Terna technicians were able to verify the performance of “Gavia”, equipped with advanced sensors and a camera that records in high definition. “Odisseo” is one of approximately 70 innovation projects carried out by Terna in five technological areas: ‘Digital’ (intelligent solutions for energy and power management), ‘Energy Tech’ (innovative solutions that use more efficient and green), ‘Grid Tech’ (technologies for effective management of the network infrastructure), ‘Advanced Materials’ (research and development activities for the use of eco-compatible materials with reduced impact on the environment) and ‘ Robotics’ (for process automation).
The ten-year development plan for the national transmission network provides for a strong increase in investments in marine cable works, also with the aim of creating a network which, among others, has characteristics of efficiency and resilience.
Among the large marine infrastructure projects carried out by Terna are the “Tyrrhenian Link”, which will unite Campania, Sicily and Sardinia, the “Adriatic Link”, the connection between Marche and Abruzzo, and “Elmed”, the energy bridge between Italy and Tunisia.
