Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Care: Personalized Treatments and Holistic Approaches

Technological advances in genomics, AI, and immunology are transforming breast cancer research, enabling personalized treatments and improved understanding of tumor biology. Key focuses include hereditary genetics, biomarkers, and obesity’s impact on cancer. Efforts also prioritize patients’ quality of life through holistic care. GEICAM highlighted these innovations at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

Technological advances are revolutionizing breast cancer research, opening the door to more personalized, precise and effective approaches. Innovative tools such as genomics, advanced immunological analysis technologies and artificial intelligence are enabling a more detailed understanding of tumor heterogeneity and the cancer microenvironment.

This not only facilitates the identification of specific characteristics of each tumor, but also the prediction of its evolution and the development of targeted therapies that fit the individual needs of each patient.

These innovations were presented by the GEICAM Breast Cancer Research Group during the closing session of the 47th edition of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium ( SABCS ), an event that took place at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid.

The biological and molecular factors that impact the development of breast cancer are the focus of numerous investigations, given their potential to promote new prevention and treatment strategies. Among the most notable areas of study are advances in the genetics of hereditary breast cancer, which represents between 5% and 10% of diagnosed cases. These studies are allowing us to explore new perspectives on the mechanisms involved in its appearance, as well as developing innovative strategies to reduce the risk of suffering from this type of tumor.

Scientific interest is also focused on the study of biomarkers , key tools for identifying biological signals associated with the presence of cancer. These indicators not only provide valuable information on the evolution of the disease and the response to specific treatments, but also on the interaction of the immune system with the tumor.

Another line of research highlighted by GEICAM researchers is the relationship between obesity and breast cancer , since it has been shown that this condition not only increases the risk of developing the disease, but also affects the effectiveness of treatments and the prognosis of patients. These findings reinforce the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors as part of a comprehensive strategy against cancer.

Quality of life in patients with breast cancer

In addition to focusing on achieving disease remission, breast cancer research aims to improve the quality of life of patients . Priority areas include sexual health, control of symptoms associated with menopause, and comprehensive patient management , with special attention to specific groups such as older women.

The incorporation of these elements into cancer care highlights the need for a holistic approach , which considers not only cancer treatment, but also the physical, emotional and social well-being of patients, ensuring more comprehensive and personalized care.

This SABCS closing session, which highlighted that research into the different subtypes of breast cancer, such as HER2-positive, luminal and triple-negative, showed that significant progress is being made in the development of more specific therapies. These advances allow treatments to be personalised according to the particular characteristics of each subtype, optimising results and improving the prognosis of patients.
