Greening Motorways: Ecogest’s Vision for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Ecogest promotes green infrastructure as a strategic solution to strengthen motorway resilience against climate change. At ASECAP Days 2025, it showcased projects using native plants, reforestation, and eco-corridors to reduce erosion, flooding, and heat impacts. This approach enhances safety, biodiversity, and sustainability while lowering maintenance and insurance costs, positioning Ecogest as an environmental innovator.

Green infrastructure is increasingly being recognized as a vital and strategic tool for enhancing the resilience of motorway systems in the face of escalating climate challenges. This forward-looking vision is being actively championed by Ecogest, a company that recently presented a comprehensive technical study during the ASECAP Days 2025.

The study illustrates how the thoughtful design and maintenance of green spaces along road networks can play a crucial role in mitigating soil erosion, managing stormwater to combat flooding, and softening the impact of extreme heat events.

Ecogest showcases innovative green solutions to enhance motorway resilience, promote biodiversity, and integrate sustainability into infrastructure design

Piero Torchi, the General Manager of Ecogest, emphasized the importance of redefining roadside greenery not as a secondary element, but as a dynamic and strategic asset. In his view, the ecological revitalization of vegetated areas bordering roadways should be seen as a proactive approach to infrastructure design—one that enhances traffic safety while also restoring ecosystems and biodiversity.

Through this integrated method, transportation corridors are transformed into ecological pathways that reduce environmental vulnerabilities and create tangible economic benefits.

Ecogest has already initiated several practical projects aligned with this philosophy. These include the planting of 11 kilometers of new trees along the SP19 in the province of Brescia, extensive green redevelopment work at service stations on the Autostrada dei Fiori, and specialized reforestation programs within natural reserves such as the Ticino Park and the Paleontological Park of Asti. These efforts not only support local biodiversity but also contribute to the containment of invasive species and the strengthening of ecological networks.

A cornerstone of Ecogest’s approach is the use of native plant species. These plants are well-adapted to local environmental conditions, which allows for sustainable green management practices that minimize the need for irrigation and lower overall maintenance costs. Furthermore, the company is investing in a combination of natural and mechanical methods to control invasive plant species and regulate water flow. This helps reduce the likelihood of road flooding and contributes to safer driving conditions.

Ecogest’s integrated green management strategy highlights the multiple benefits of a nature-based infrastructure model. It offers long-term protection for transport assets, reduces the frequency and severity of weather-related damages, and helps cut down on insurance expenses linked to extreme weather events.

By presenting this innovative approach at ASECAP Days, Ecogest has reinforced its position as a leader in environmental innovation within the infrastructure sector. The company advocates for a future where environmental stewardship, road safety, and sustainable development are not isolated goals but interwoven elements of a single, efficient system.
