EmTech Italy 2025: AI, Innovation, and the Future of Technology in Society
EmTech Italy 2025, organized by MIT Technology Review Italia and Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, debuted in Italy, focusing on AI’s impact on healthcare, energy, and society. Featuring 50+ speakers and cutting-edge tech demos, the event highlights Italy’s innovation potential, AI advancements, and ethical challenges in emerging technologies, fostering global dialogue and collaboration.

EmTech Italy 2025 Human & Tech has opened, the reference event for emerging technologies, which saw its official debut in Italy with high-level interventions, inspired discussions and cutting-edge technological demonstrations.
Organized by MIT Technology Review Italia and the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, and hosted at Cu.Bo, the event brings together international experts, academics, institutional leaders and voices from the industrial sector to explore the impact of Artificial Intelligence on healthcare, energy and society.
The event hosts on the first day 700 opinion leaders, decision makers, academics, experts and world-renowned CEOs, who operate in these sectors and contribute to driving the development of the economy and innovation in society, taking part together with representatives of institutions, at all levels.
Over 50 speakers including authoritative, institutional and academic names alternate in more than 20 round tables and keynote speeches presenting success stories and moments of discussion on the tools and strategies for developing new technologies for practical applications in the three main areas.
The proceedings started with institutional greetings from MIT and the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, followed by speeches by Renato Brunetta, President of the National Council of Economy and Labor, and Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister of Business and Made in Italy. The speakers underlined the strategic value of innovation for the growth of the country and the importance of events such as EmTech to stimulate the debate on new technologies and sustainable development.
“This year, for the first time, EmTech is taking place in Italy, in Rome. It is a high-level platform that involves representatives of the public and private sectors in a concrete discussion on the transformative effects of technology, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on people’s lives. It represents the space in which the great projects of the future will be born and an opportunity to position Italy at the center of this ecosystem.”
“Italy boasts the fourth place in the world for scientific production and has technological excellence of international importance, which we have a duty to enhance and promote beyond national borders. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the partners who supported this initiative and to the 50 speakers, both Italian and international, who chose to contribute to these two days of in-depth study on topics such as health, biotechnology, environment, sustainability and society.” – commented Tommaso Canonici, editor of MIT Technology Review Italia.
“The EmTech Italy 2025 event was created in close collaboration with the MIT Technology Review, with the aim of promoting innovation with a moment of direct dialogue between the participating companies with many institutions, universities and research bodies. It is also very stimulating to host this event in our new Cu.Bo (CUltural BOx) building dedicated to advanced teaching and simulation of the use of innovative technologies. This is a very important initiative for our country, created in synergy with a highly qualified team, which I would like to sincerely thank for their valuable contribution.”
Among the most anticipated moments, the keynote by Alec Ross, author of The Industries of the Future and former senior advisor for innovation at the US Department of State, who explored the topic of digitalization and growth in the era of artificial intelligence: technology is redefining the way we work, communicate and innovate. In this scenario, events like EmTech Italy prove to be fundamental for guiding a responsible and sustainable transformation.
“When we talk about Artificial Intelligence, we must distinguish four fundamental categories. The first is the perceptive one, that is, the technology that recognizes voice, text and images, like Siri or the voice assistants in our cars. It is the basis on which modern AI has developed. Today, however, the great protagonist is generative Artificial Intelligence, which does not limit itself to understanding, but creates new content: texts, images, music. It is the one that is attracting the most attention, but there are already those who are looking beyond.”
“The next step is, in fact, autonomous Artificial Intelligence, capable of completing complex tasks. It doesn’t just answer questions, but performs actions: it books a trip, organizes the agenda, optimizes a system. This is the real revolution underway. Finally, there is physical Artificial Intelligence, where technology becomes tangible: drones, robots, industrial automation. Here Italy can be a leader, thanks to its tradition in manufacturing and precision industry. The future of AI is not only in large linguistic models, but in concrete applications that transform the real world.” – said Alec Ross.
EmTech Italy also hosted moments of practical demonstration of innovations applied to the hospital setting
Professor Leandro Pecchia and Professor Loredana Zollo , from the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, respectively presented Artificial Intelligence and robotics solutions used in the clinical setting: among these, Frakie , a robot dog that uses its sense of smell to search for bacteria and fungi, helping to fight infections that develop inside hospitals; Thiago , a humanoid robot that supports the work carried out by nurses: equipped with sensors, cameras and mechanical arms, it is used in healthcare and domestic settings to transport medicines, organs and delicate materials; a third robot called Hosbot , is instead used in hospital logistics services.
AI and health for the new frontiers of medicine, robotics and hospitals of the future, digital humanism and neuroscience, but also sustainability, energy and space in the challenges of tomorrow: these are the main themes reviewed on the first day of the event. Tomorrow, the day will be dedicated to the ethical challenges that the sector will have to face between new developments in emerging technologies and responsible applications in the aerospace and smart cities industry.
EmTech Italy, the flagship format of MIT Technology Review, the oldest and most authoritative magazine on innovation and technology of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , debuts in Italy with the support of prestigious partners, such as Takeda Italia, Incyte, Deloitte, CISCO – Technology Partner, Intesa Sanpaolo – Educational Partner, Angelini Ventures, Assobiotec, Eni, Merck , Poste Italiane and Soremartec Italia.
