A great Italian idea has resulted in the creation of a single-seat car made of hemp, with very high performance and top sustainability. The car, called Torq GP, uses a chassis made with 75% hemp. Thanks to its low weight, the vehicle boasts great sporting performance.

Not only is the construction based on hemp, the car can also be powered with a fuel distilled from hemp. This new vehicle reminds us of a car designed by Henry Ford almost 80 years ago, which was made with hemp and was called the Ford Hemp Body.

La Gazzeta.it, which reported the news of this super sports car, interviewed Thomas Bleiner, the Torq GP’s manufacturer’s innovation manager. He said that “the hemp distillate, already used by Henry Ford in 1937, is an eco-compatible fuel, and in our view, it could also be successful in the production of series cars in the future. In fact, the hemp fiber is manufactured exactly like carbon fiber, resulting in a fabric that is then solidified with a specific resin. Thanks to this technological innovation, this hemp fiber, which is much lighter than metal and has a similar weight to carbon fiber, can be used to create really interesting racing cars.”

Torq GP Features

The Torq GP has a two-stroke V6 engine with almost 600 horsepower. It has the particularity of being able to use alternative fuels: hemp distillate, hydrogen (hydro gas), or a mixture of ethanol and gasoline.

The sports car weighs 725 kilograms. The first concept was presented at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and had 75% of its body and parts made from hemp fiber. “With the Torq, our project aims to exploit innovative technologies that can bring some new thrills to the world of racing, which is often boring, today,” said Thomas Bleiner.

Industry experts say that the Torq GP is the most environmentally friendly single-seater in the world. The Torq GP thus claims to be eco-sustainable, using natural materials for both the structure and the body, as well as the fuel.

The Torq GP was created by the Turin-based Italian company ED – Excellence Design. Its founder, Davide Pizzorno, also announced a championship for these sustainable single-seaters starting in 2022.

The Excellence Design company announced this championship with the Torq GP for this coming 2022 season. When this car is delivered to its customers it will be accompanied by five specialists including engineers, technicians, and aerodynamicists.

Former pilot Thomas Bleiner Driven is in charge of this project. The competition that would start in 2022 will be based on a spectacular platform of important technological innovations. The aim is to combine respect for the environment with a return to real motor-racing thrills.

Car racing cannot be at odds with a kind treatment of the environment. We applaud new ideas that seek to combine motorsport with sustainability for a better world.

According to Bleiner, “the championship we want to organize starting in 2022 will be a laboratory and an excellent showcase for certain technologies, which in our opinion are destined for mass production.” In these races, hydrogen fuel will be used in the first part and a hemp distillate in the second part. It is expected that this competition could see the light of day in 2022 in Italy.

All races will have a first section of 130 kilometers where cars will use a unique system that produces hydrogen on demand and without space or technology for storage.

In the second part of the race, the public will participate online and the type of fuel to be used will be established between E85 and hemp distillate. The race management team would like the races to be held in Italy, at Monza or Imola, or elsewhere. “Then in Asia, a new and innovative market, in America, where interest has already been shown, also in Europe with Russia in the first place,” saidThomas Bleiner.
