The Vienna Book Fair will open its doors on November 20th with an opening speech by the German philosopher and former Minister of State for Culture Julian Nida-Rümelin on the “Future of Democracy.” In it, the keynote speaker of the 2021 Salzburg Festival discusses “political orientation in challenging times,” as the subtitle says.

There will be 412 events up until November 24th, which are intended to be used for exchanging views and international networking. In addition, three new thematic focuses are being set: “Politics & Security Policy”, “Economy & Finance” and “Science & Technology”, according to a press release.
A series of events is dedicated to these under the motto “Storm and thirst for knowledge”, in which former EU Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler will discuss with Justyna Gotkowska from the Centre for Eastern Studies and Austrian Army expert Markus Reisner whether the EU needs its own army.
The new Science Lounge declares “war on scientific skepticism,” as the announcement states. The jam-packed fiction program includes both local and international authors, including Arno Geiger, Barbara Zeman, Joachim Meyerhoff and Mircea Cărtărescu. The winner of the Austrian Book Prize has already been decided before the fair begins: the awards ceremony will take place on November 18th.
