Schur Flexible is part of the 50 companies in the Sustainability & Climate Leader initiative
Schur Flexibles is one of 50 companies in the global “Sustainability & Climate Leader” initiative. The focus is on concrete activities to achieve the United Nations climate goals. As a manufacturer of protective packaging solutions, Schur Flexibles contributes to the change towards sustainability. In 2021, companies that are part of the initiative will exchange concrete solutions for a green economy at a UN summit.
The “50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders” initiative unites 50 companies worldwide in a joint initiative to demonstrate concrete steps and best practices in the fight against climate change. Schur Flexibles is contributing to this effort by using sustainable packaging to prevent food spoilage and lead to a reduction in the carbon footprint of the food supply for the population.
“Our team at Schur Flexibles is working determinedly to pave the way for a sustainable future with innovation projects,” explained Michael Schernthaner, CEO of Schur Flexibles. “Along our integrated value chain from film production to finished printed packaging, we focus on the question of “how we produce”. We pay utmost attention to the protection of packaged goods, but also take responsibility for the impact of our business on people – employees, consumers and partners. With a view to innovations in processes and products, we want to live up to this claim in our work every day.”

5R strategy for climate protection
The 5R strategy sets the sustainability program at Schur Flexibles along the entire value chain: Recycling, Replacement, Reduction, Renewal and Responsibility. The company also follows this claim with targeted cooperation projects in the sustainability area.
One of these partners is the start-up “Recyda”, which is gradually making information on the recyclability of packaging accessible throughout Europe with a new database, thus accelerating the development of the circular economy. Schur Flexibles also supports the “Save Food” initiative in the fight against food waste.
Fight against microplastics in the environment
As a company in the plastics industry, Schur Flexibles is committed to a voluntary, strict control program along the production chain when cooperating with “Operation Clean Sweep”. “We see it as our duty within the entire group of companies to prevent materials from escaping into the environment – this includes all our sites, not just those that process granulates,” commented Fiene Berger, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Schur Flexibles. The company also conducts regular internal audits that ensure waste management at the highest level.
Part of this waste management is also the development of a site-specific recycling management system, for example, the company’s own solvent recovery plant is currently being expanded at one of the largest production sites. This will enable the company to absorb emissions from the printing process directly at the production site, clean them and convert them into reusable solvents on site.
Solutions for a determined climate fight
In future-oriented sustainability programs, digitization takes on a central function. For example, the “Flying Doctors,” the company’s technical specialists, provide resource-saving support through the use of augmented reality technology by means of remote maintenance of equipment and machinery, and accompany customers in the implementation of sustainable packaging alternatives.
With this holistic sustainability concept, which includes the entire production process and all those involved, Schur Flexibles creates the basis for systematic and ongoing improvements and thus also the corresponding implementation successes of a sustainably oriented corporate development. On the platform www.50climateleaders.com, a video documentation shows current examples of this sustainability program.
