Study Shows a Decrease in Cannabis Use Among Young Users in Spain
The study data also allow a comparison to be made by provincial capitals. Thus, the number of joints consumed among young potential consumers between 13 and 25 years of age has dropped from 4.5 joints to two in Castellón, from 4.5 joints to 1.5 in Alicante and from 4.5 to two joints also in Valencia, according to those surveyed.
Cannabis consumption among young people aged 13 to 25 years has potentially decreased in the Comunitat, according to the conclusions of the second study conducted by the Valencian NGO Controla Club, as part of the various information and awareness actions carried out in the three provincial capitals on cannabis consumption.
The study, which has been carried out in leisure areas, squares, parks, skate parks and around education and training centers in Valencia, Alicante, and Castellón, indicates that young people who claim to consume cannabis smoke two joints on average, while in the sample carried out in 2020 the average stood at 4.5 joints.
In addition, 45.6% of the surveyed youth population of potential consumers say they currently use cannabis, 10 percentage points less than in 2020, when the percentage stood at 55.8%.
In the same way, the weekly consumption expenditure among those surveyed has also decreased since, if in 2020 the weekly average stood at 10.5 euros, in 2021 it was 5.8 euros, as stated in the study. In percentage terms, in 2020, 46.4% of the people questioned said they spent more than 10 euros a week on cannabis and in 2021 the percentage dropped to 15.6%.
Another relevant data analyzed and detected by the fieldwork of Controla Club’s team of mediators is the adverse effects produced by cannabis consumption. Likewise, the percentage of young consumers surveyed who recognize having suffered, quite often or very often, some kind of health problem after having consumed has increased, going from 14.2% in 2020 to 24.3% in 2021; that is, one out of every four people surveyed.
More specifically, 24.3% of the people surveyed admit to having suffered anxiety crises after consuming cannabis, 20.6% say they have suffered tachycardia, 19.9% say they have had low blood pressure and/or lipotimia, and 13.5% say they have had difficulty sleeping.

Cannabis consumption by provinces
The study data also allow a comparison to be made by provincial capitals. Thus, the number of joints consumed among young potential consumers between 13 and 25 years of age has dropped from 4.5 joints to two in Castellón, from 4.5 joints to 1.5 in Alicante, and from 4.5 to two joints also in Valencia, according to those surveyed.
With regard to the weekly expenditure made by this segment of the population, this has dropped from 13 euros on average in 2020 to 5.6 euros in 2021 in Castellón, followed by 10.9 euros on average in 2020 to 6.9 euros in 2021 in Valencia and a drop from 7.5 euros in 2020 to 5.7 euros in 2021 in Alicante.
In view of the data obtained, the director of Controla Club Programs, Juan Barcala, indicated that all the indicators seem to point to “a significant drop in abusive consumption among the youth population that is potentially consuming cannabis, which encourages us to continue with the research to deepen the analysis of this consumption,” he said.
He also highlighted the 55.3% drop in the budget allocated to the purchase of cannabis, taking into account both the decrease in the quantities consumed and the drop in the price of hashish after the end of the pandemic and the restrictions on mobility that hindered the retailing and trafficking of this substance.
