FIFA Kicks Off Web3 Era with Avalanche-Powered Blockchain
FIFA is launching its own Layer 1 blockchain using Avalanche technology, signaling a major move into Web3. Building on its 2022 NFT debut, FIFA aims to expand into digital collectibles, fan engagement, and more. This bold step highlights blockchain’s mainstream adoption and could reshape the future of global sports experiences and digital ownership.

FIFA is taking the next step toward a blockchain future: As officially announced, the world football governing body will build its own Layer 1 blockchain based on Avalanche technology.
This continues a development that began in 2022 with an NFT collection for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Algorand. But this time, FIFA is thinking much bigger – and that could transform the sports and crypto markets alike.
FIFA Blockchain: Own infrastructure for global applications
The new blockchain will be designed as a so-called Avalanche L1—a standalone, high-performance, and individually configurable blockchain based on the Avalanche ecosystem. Avalanche is known for its high speed, low fees, and modular scalability—characteristics that are crucial for large organizations like FIFA.
John Nahas of Ava Labs aptly describes the move: “FIFA’s decision to choose Avalanche shows that our technology is ready for global applications with the highest demands on security and performance.”
The timing is also interesting: Avalanche has just completed the “Avalanche9000” upgrade, which is intended to attract new developers and facilitate the creation of custom blockchains – just in time for FIFA.
More than NFTs? FIFA stays on the ball
FIFA hasn’t yet announced any concrete projects beyond NFTs, but the move toward its own blockchain offers hope for more. In addition to digital collectibles, tickets, fan reward systems, live statistics, or even fantasy leagues could be directly represented on the new platform in the future—all in a Web 3 environment that gives users true digital ownership rights.
FIFA’s commitment to blockchain technology despite the cooling NFT euphoria is a strong signal. While many companies have retreated after the crypto winter, the most important organization in world football continues to build a digital future – thus laying the foundation for new fan experiences on a global scale.
Conclusion: FIFA invests in control and innovation
For you as a crypto enthusiast or football fan, this means: Blockchain is not only being further developed by startups and DeFi projects – it is also being used seriously by heavyweights like FIFA. Avalanche’s own Layer 1 demonstrates that Web3 has entered the mainstream.
Stay tuned – because what starts today with digital trading cards could soon open up completely new ways to experience football.
