Healthcare Technology Must Be Updated Every 10 Years to Ensure Accurate Diagnoses and Effective Treatments

Healthcare technology should be replaced every ten years, with proper maintenance throughout its lifecycle to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency. Fenin’s new guide, based on Cocir’s recommendations, promotes best practices for managing medical equipment. It emphasizes qualified maintenance providers, responsible disposal, and sustainability, aiming to support safer and more effective healthcare systems.

The recommended lifespan for most healthcare technology equipment is ten years, according to international guidelines. To ensure its reliability, proper maintenance of healthcare technology throughout its entire life cycle is key. After this period, it is advisable to replace it to ensure more accurate diagnoses and improve the effectiveness of treatments.

Current healthcare regulations require proper maintenance of equipment throughout its useful life. Poor management can compromise the reliability of clinical results. Furthermore, it can affect the safety of patients and professionals, as well as the economic and environmental sustainability of healthcare facilities.

To support compliance with these standards, the Spanish Federation of Healthcare Technology Companies (Fenin) has presented the Guide to Good Practices for Healthcare Technology Maintenance. This document is based on the recommendations of the European Coordination Committee for Radiology, Electromedicine, and Healthcare Technologies (Cocir). It is aimed at companies in the sector, hospitals, and technical services. Its objective is to optimize the safe and efficient use of medical technology.

“It’s not only important to replace equipment on time, but also to ensure quality maintenance that extends the performance of healthcare technology over those ten years,” emphasized Manel Rodríguez, vice president of the Clinical Information Systems and Technologies Sector (TySIC) at Fenin. The guide includes internationally recognized best practices for maximizing the value of equipment throughout its lifecycle.

From Cocir, Ricardo Corridori, coordinator of the Equipment Maintenance working group, points out that “selecting trusted maintenance providers is key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of medical equipment.” This organization’s recommendations seek to ensure maximum durability and performance of medical technologies.

The guide details all phases of the equipment lifecycle. It covers aspects ranging from installation and maintenance to upgrades and final retirement. It also offers criteria for technical oversight, inspection frequency, and the selection of qualified suppliers.

Fenin and Cocir also emphasize the importance of safely disposing of equipment at the end of its useful life. They promote the use of accredited recycling channels and the reuse of valuable materials.

With this initiative, Fenin reinforces the need to combine periodic renewal of the healthcare technology with rigorous maintenance. This promotes safe, efficient, and sustainable healthcare.
