The Extremadura Science and Technology Park (PCTEX) in Badajoz will host ‘Biotech Conecta: Connecting the Bio Potential of Extremadura’ on December 10th, which aims to consolidate the role of biotechnology as a “development engine” for the region in strategic sectors such as agri-food and health.

Organised by Fundecyt-PCTEx, this meeting seeks to establish the foundations of a dynamic and cohesive regional biotechnology community, capable of addressing the “great global challenges” from Extremadura, as stated by the Regional Government in a press release.

The aim is to focus on biotechnology as a key resource for responding to the “social, technological and environmental challenges that are transforming the economy.”

Extremadura, with its “commitment to research and innovation”, is positioned as a “reference” in the development of high-value bioproducts, such as drugs, probiotics, diagnostic and treatment processes for diseases and sustainable industrial processes, the regional government stresses.

The event’s program will include presentations and sessions to analyse regional positioning in relation to global trends and networking dynamics, with the aim of promoting connections between agents in the biotech ecosystem, with the participation of biotechnology experts from various fields.

The central block of the event will be developed with a series of sectorial panels focused on the opportunities and challenges of biotechnology in Extremadura.

Meanwhile, in the agri-food sector, the head of Biotechnology at CTAEx, José Antonio García Barrado, will analyse the regional positioning in relation to agro-biotechnological trends, followed by a presentation on good local biotechnological practices in the agricultural sector.

Regarding the health sector, María Coronada Fernández Calderón, from the Extremadura University Institute for Biosanitary Research (INUBE), will present the region’s potential to address biotechnological trends in the health field, complemented by the researcher at the company Ingulados SL, María Bravo, who will share applied practical cases.

The industrial sector will be the focus of attention with a reflection on the positioning of Extremadura in relation to global trends in industrial biotechnology, with the participation of Jonathan Delgado, from Cicytex, and a review of good practices in this field.

Following a dynamic presentation of initiatives and results of some of the projects in which Fundecyt-PCTEx is involved, work will be done to design the next steps to further connect the biotechnology sector in Extremadura by 2025.

Registration, which is open and free of charge, can be completed through the Fundecyt-PCTEx website, where all the information regarding the event can be consulted. The event is being held with co-financing from the FEDER Extremadura 2021-2027 Programme, within the framework of the TE “Governance of the RIS3 Extremadura 2027 and the EDPs.”

It has the collaboration of the Iberobio project, part of the Interreg VI A Spain-Portugal Program (POCTEP) 2021-2027, in which Extremadura participates through Fundecyt-PCTEx and leads the Business Technology Cluster of Life Sciences of Galicia (Bioga).
