Begehungen Art Festival Launches Crowdfunding to Boost Accessibility in Chemnitz
The Begehungen art festival in Chemnitz is launching a crowdfunding campaign running until June 18 to support its 23rd edition, held June 19–July 5 at the partly closed Chemnitz Playhouse. Funds will improve accessibility through ramps, sign language, and audio description. With declining public funding, the project relies on volunteers, partners, and inclusive, multisensory art experiences.
The Begehungen art festival is breaking new ground this year: Before the official opening, the Begehungen e. V. association has launched a crowdfunding campaign that will run until June 18th.
Begehungen Art Festival at the Chemnitz Playhouse
The 23rd edition of the Begehungen art festival will take place from June 19th to July 5th at the Chemnitz Playhouse in the Park of the Victims of Fascism. This location has been the focus of a citywide debate for years.
Local restrictions
The theater has been closed since 2022 due to structural defects. In Chemnitz, there is currently intense debate about whether the building should be renovated, redesigned, or used differently in the long term.
While politicians and the city council discuss the building’s future, the Begehungen Art festival team is already working on-site under the existing conditions – with all the limitations that the building’s condition entails.
Accessibility at the Begehungen Art Festival is a central goal of the campaign
The funds raised through the crowdfunding campaign will be used to implement very specific measures under the motto “Festival for all”: These include sign language interpretation, the purchase of materials for the construction of wheelchair ramps, skilled trades services, and the creation of an audio description.
“Funding is becoming increasingly scarce”
The financial framework also plays a crucial role. The association points out that traditional funding for participation and inclusion projects is steadily declining.
“Unfortunately, funding for participation and inclusion is also decreasing. We therefore hope for strong civic engagement to make the tours accessible to everyone again,” explained Chairman of the Board Matthias Döhler.
Overcoming obstacles for the Begehungen Art Festival
The Begehungen Art Festival’s goals extend beyond purely structural measures. It also focuses on alternative approaches to art: for example, works should be experienced through various senses, such as hearing, touch, or smell. The concept also includes making the project easily accessible to different target groups.
Volunteering, partners and collaborations
The art festival is largely made possible through the voluntary commitment of the members of Begehungen e. V. and many supporters. In addition, the organizers collaborate with various partners who contribute their expertise in the field of accessibility – including the SFZ Chemnitz and the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Chemnitz with its adjacent residential center and nursing home.
Dates, location and opening hours
The exhibition opens on June 19th at 6 pm at the Chemnitz Playhouse, Zieschestraße 28th. Afterwards, it will be open daily from 11 am to 8 pm until July 5th, and until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On June 26th, the exhibition will even remain open until midnight.
