Cummins Was Included in the Global ESG Index
S&P Global’s 2022 review had a record 1,728 companies participating, a 9% increase from 2021. The review was based on a combination of companies’ self-disclosures and external media coverage. The S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index, first launched in 1999, is one of the oldest ESG/sustainability rankings. The ranking evaluates the largest publicly traded U.S. companies in five key areas-customer satisfaction
Cummins was last listed in the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability World Index in 2013. The company has also been included in the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America for the 16th consecutive year.
“It is very gratifying to have our environmental, social, and governance efforts recognized, and to know that investors believe these are important elements of the Cummins story,” said Karen Cecil, the company’s director of global environmental sustainability. “These efforts are part of Cummins’ core values and mission to power a more prosperous world.
“I’m especially proud of the 60,000 employees who work every day to imagine what’s possible and identify sustainable solutions to go further, faster,” Cecil added.

The Global Sustainability Index was first launched in 1999
S&P Global, the world’s largest provider of market indexes, says a record 1,728 companies eligible for selection into one of the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes participated in the 2022 review, a 9% increase over 2021. The initiative reviewed an estimated 13.4 million data points to arrive at its 2022 indexes.
“Last year, more companies than ever before participated in S&P’s global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA),” said President and CEO Douglas Peterson in a report accompanying the release of the indexes. “The CSA forms the backbone of the research on which this report is based. We thank the companies that have participated in this process, demonstrating their continued commitment to transparency regarding ESG performance. “
Unlike ESG DataSets, which are based solely on publicly available information, the S&P Dow Jones says its review is based on a combination of company disclosures through a comprehensive survey, as well as media coverage of the companies reviewed and stakeholder analysis.
The Global Sustainability Index was first launched in 1999, making it one of the oldest sustainability/ESG (environmental, social and governance) rankings.
Cummins was last listed on the S&P Dow Jones Sustainability World Index in 2013, before returning to the list in 2021 and now in 2022. The company said it is committed to playing a leading role in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions while implementing programs to promote gender equality around the world and addressing institutional racism in the United States.
The ranking evaluates the largest publicly traded U.S. companies in five key areas-customer satisfaction, employee engagement and development, innovation, social responsibility, and financial strength-to arrive at an effectiveness score.
