SoundSafe Care, a cutting-edge medtech startup that fuses robotics and ultrasound to revolutionize cancer treatment and enable noninvasive surgical treatments, has closed a €1.75 million round led by RoboIT, the National Technology Transfer Hub for Robotics and Industrial Automation, promoted by CDP Venture Capital sgr, through the Technology Transfer Fund.

The deal also saw the participation, on the one hand, of an investment vehicle of Pariter Robotics sgr, dedicated to robotics and promoted by Pariter Partners; and on the other, of Fondo Toscana Next, a new co-investment fund dedicated to supporting startups and innovation initiatives in Tuscany, also managed by CDP Venture Capital and supported by Fondazione CR Firenze, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, Fondazione Caript and Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena.

SoundSafe is a spin-off of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, born in the research labs of the Institute of BioRobotics and founded in May 2022 by Andrea Mariani and Laura Morchi

SoundSafe had already cashed in initial funding from RoboIT last February, the amount of which, however, was not specified.

Meanwhile, SoundSafe also announced that it had won four awards at the final event of Meet in Italy for Life Sciences – Startup Breeding 2023, dedicated to entrepreneurial ideas and startups in the life sciences sector. Specifically, the startup won:

The BacktoWork Special Award, which offers a voucher and additional favorable economic conditions to 1 finalist selected by the award jury, to be used to carry out a fundraising campaign through its platform within a year after the end of the event;

The award from InnovUp, the association of the Italian innovative entrepreneurship ecosystem, which offers free membership to all Startup Breeding 2023 finalists and provides free access to the association’s conventions, services, and all its activities and special projects for members;

The EIT Health Special Award, i.e., a voucher to access the EIT Health Mentoring and Coaching Network, a platform of experts, partners, institutions and companies from across Europe;

The RP Legal & Tax Special Award, i.e., 15 hours of legal assistance from a professional from the firm to one of the finalist startups.

The resources raised through the equity round will help support, including by expanding the team by introducing targeted professional figures, and the technological development of the innovative therapeutic device that combines robotics and focused ultrasound for safe and effective surgery for cancer treatments. In addition, part of the capital will go to support validation and certification activities toward entry into the veterinary world first and use on humans later.

Claudia Pingue, head of CDP Venture Capital sgr’s Technology Transfer fund, commented, “We started investing in Soundsafe Care when the team was still in the research lab, and now to see them established in a real startup, committed to raising capital and projected toward the clinical market can only be a source of great satisfaction for us.”

“It is precisely to support the creation of new deep-tech startups that we decided to create our National Technology Transfer Poles, each specializing in a segment of Research Excellence with great market prospects. RoboIT was the first hub we launched, with Pariter Partners and leading scientific promoters, including the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, which saw the idea of such an enthusiastic team as SoundSafe come to life,” Pingue concluded.
