Spain Commits Over €120 Million to Advance Health Research and Innovation
Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, via ISCIII, is allocating over €120 million to health research and personnel contracts under AES 2025. €81.6 million funds 498 projects across cancer, chronic diseases, pediatrics, neurology, cardiovascular health, and more. Additional €40 million supports 250 contracts, mobility programs, independent clinical research, and health technology development initiatives.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) in Spain, through the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), allocates more than 120 million euros to health research projects and personnel contracts.
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, emphasized that “the Spanish Government is committed to science, people’s health, and the professionals who make biomedical and healthcare advances possible.”
Specifically, the provisional resolution for the grant award for the PI call for R&D&I Projects in Health has been published, within the framework of the Strategic Action in Health (SAH) 2025, the main tool for funding biomedical and healthcare research in Spain. The provisional resolution for this call awards €81.6 million for 498 health research projects.
Fundable projects in Spain include research on cancer; endocrine, digestive, and surgical diseases; chronic, respiratory, inflammatory, and nephrological pathologies; pediatrics, perinatal medicine, and congenital and metabolic abnormalities; epidemiology, public health, health services, health technologies, and telemedicine; infectious diseases and AIDS; neurological and mental disorders; and cardiovascular diseases, which will improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care.

This provisional resolution is added to another 10 resolutions published before the summer, which allocate 40 million euros to contracts for more than 250 people and other research projects in Spain.
Specifically, €18 million is allocated to the Sara Borrell, Juan Rodés, and Miguel Servet contracts, totaling 90 contracts, and more than €5 million for Mobility (M-BAE and M-AES), Research Intensification, Health R&D&I Management in IIS, and Bioinformatics Technical Personnel.
In addition, more than €16 million is allocated to other research projects in Spain, including the provisional resolutions of the Independent Clinical Research calls (almost €13 million for 14 projects), the Incorporation of New Groups into the CIBER Consortium, and Health Technological Development (€3.3 million for 18 projects).
The ISCIII’s AES 2025 will be completed in the coming months with the provisional award resolutions for the Río Hortega contract calls, the PFIS and i-PFIS predoctoral contracts, and the International Collaboration (AC) Projects.
