Bravo Innovation Hub: The Startups that Will Design the Cities of the Future

One of the startups present at the Bravo Innovation Hub is Trailslight. TRAILS is a new adaptive lighting system, usable for streetlights, industrial and indoor environments, that uses intelligent sound transduction, enabled by MEMS microphones, to extract information from traffic noise (vehicular and human) in an environment, saving more than 40 percent compared to uncontrolled LED streetlights.

The startups SunCubes and Trailslight, are among the ten startups that are participating in Bravo Innovation Hub in Cagliari, engaged in projects related to “Green Mobility and Smart Cities.”

In these weeks in which Bravo Innovation Hub is in full swing, we are recounting the ten 10-and-up startups engaged in Invitalia’s acceleration track, implemented by Nana Bianca, Apply Consulting and StartupItalia, in Cagliari, at the Metropolitan Library and Multipurpose Hall, inside the Monte Claro Park.

SunCubes, one of the startups, is building the future space energy infrastructure

SunCubes aims to create the future space energy infrastructure, based on the use of laser technology. The product is a system composed of two devices: the generator and the receiver. Through the use of a low-power laser, the system enables versatile, simple, and wireless charging of devices that are half a kilometer away and difficult to access.

At the application level, there is no laser solution on the market for public infrastructure. At the technology level, however, the innovation is in the efficiency chain as a whole and in the two-pointing and shut-off systems to avoid safety issues. The goal is to sell the charging system to companies that manufacture and install the sensors on public infrastructure generating an initial revenue by strengthening future entry into the space market.

The technology used is based on the electrical conversion capability of photovoltaic panels optimized for the wavelength of the laser used, reaching efficiencies of about 70 percent. The increase in efficiency is reflected in a reduction in panel size compared to a normal photovoltaic panel using the power of the sun. The main partner is Movyon s.p.a. with whom SunCubes develops the PoC, testing its algorithms and digital twin.

Trailslight turns every streetlight into an IoT device

TRAILS is a new adaptive lighting system, usable for streetlights, industrial and indoor environments, that uses intelligent sound transduction, enabled by MEMS microphones, to extract information from traffic noise (vehicular and human) in an environment, so as to adapt the switching on, switching off and intensity level of lighting accordingly, saving more than 40 percent compared to uncontrolled LED streetlights.

The main advantages for Multiutilty and Municipality over what is offered on the market to apply adaptive lighting relate to integrability: the MEMS microphones and processors used are only a few millimeters in size, therefore, they are directly integrable of current control systems (LCS).

Then there is the issue of affordability: compared to the adaptive control systems prevalent today (use of cameras), the overall price of the TRAILS solution stands at about -60%. Finally, privacy: the transduced information is not invasive in terms of privacy since the sound is not traceable to any personal data, as is the case with cameras.

The startup was awarded by CNA Bologna as part of rotary 2022 district 2073. TRAILS was also awarded as a responsible innovation in the ecological field by the Emilia-Romagna region.
