Bank of Africa Leads Winners at African Banker Awards

Bank of Africa was named North Africa’s best bank at the African Banker Awards. Other regional and individual winners included Ecobank, top executives, and leading institutions. Awards also honored achievements in finance, sustainability, fintech, and inclusion. The event, held during AfDB meetings in Brazzaville, celebrates contributions to Africa’s financial development and growth.

The Moroccan bank Bank Of Africa (BOA) was named best bank in North Africa at the 20th edition of the “African Banker Awards,” awarded Wednesday in Brazzaville on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The regional rankings also recognized Zambia’s Zanaco for South Africa, Tanzania’s CRDB Bank for East Africa, Trust Merchant Bank of the Republic of Congo for Central Africa, and Ghana Commercial Bank for West Africa. Furthermore, the Bank of the Year award was given to Togo’s Ecobank, which operates in 35 countries.

In the individual categories, the “Minister of Finance of the Year” trophy was awarded to Zambia’s Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane. The Governor of the Central Bank of Congo, André Wameso, won the Central Bank Governor of the Year award, while the Banker of the Year award went to the President of the West African Development Bank, Serge Ekué.

The African Banker Icon Award was presented to Bissau-Guinean investment banker and entrepreneur Paulo Gomes, Chairman of Orango Investment Corporation. The Lifetime Achievement Award honored Henri-Claude Oyima, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BGFIBank Group, while the Cairo-based African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) was named Development Finance Institution of the Year. In the area of ​​women’s financial inclusion, the AFAWA Trophy was awarded to Rawbank, a commercial bank in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In other categories, Nigeria’s Bank of Industry was awarded as a sustainable bank, Kenya’s Cooperative Bank stood out for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and Ziidi Trader received the Fintech of the Year award.

For the “Deals of the Year” awards, NBet Finance Company PLC (created by Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading) and Cardinal Stone Partners won the Debt category. Red Rocket Holdco, Absa, and Rand Merchant Bank received the Infrastructure trophy, while Arise IIP Exit/Equity Raise and Africz Finance Corporation were awarded in the Equity category.

Organized by African Banker magazine and IC Events in cooperation with Business in Africa Events, these awards recognize individuals who have contributed to the continent’s financial development. The African Development Bank’s Annual Meetings are taking place in Brazzaville until May 29th, focusing on the theme of resource mobilization for Africa’s development.
