CBD and CBG Show Promise in Reducing Fatty Liver and Improving Metabolism
Research from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, led by Joseph Tam, found that cannabis compounds Cannabidiol (CBD) and Cannabigerol (CBG) reduced liver fat and improved metabolism in obese mice. Published in the British Journal of Pharmacology (2026), the study suggests these non-intoxicating compounds enhance liver energy reserves and fat cleanup, with CBG showing stronger effects. Human trials are still needed.
Can cannabis compounds help our liver? Scientists have good news. CBD and CBG compounds effectively reduce fat in the liver and improve the body’s overall metabolism.
The study was conducted by scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The team was led by Professor Joseph Tam, Doctor Liad Hinden and researcher Radka Kočvarová. They were published in the prestigious British Journal of Pharmacology in 2026.
Fatty liver disease is a global problem
Fatty liver disease (MASLD) is a very common condition. It affects about one third of adults worldwide.
This disease is often associated with obesity and hypertension. It is also associated with insulin resistance. There are currently no effective drugs on the market for this disease. The only approved drug is resmetirom, but it only works on severe inflammation.
Doctors mainly recommend diet and exercise. However, it is difficult to maintain such habits over the years. That’s why scientists are looking for new drugs.
How do CBD and CBG help the liver?
CBD and CBG are natural substances from hemp plants. Importantly, they do not cause a feeling of intoxication.Scientists gave them to obese mice for four weeks. The results turned out to be very promising.
These compounds change the way the liver manages energy. They do this in two main ways.
Reserve energy for cells
The liver is under a lot of strain due to a poor diet. CBD and CBG create a special energy buffer in liver cells.
These substances increase phosphocreatine levels in the liver. Phosphocreatine acts as a backup battery. It helps cells survive difficult times. The liver produces this reserve thanks to an enzyme called creatine kinase. After administration of CBD and CBG, this enzyme works twice as actively.
Cleaning up harmful fats
Cells have their own recycling centers. They are called lysosomes.CBD and CBG repair the function of these centers.
These compounds stimulate cathepsins to work. Cathepsins are small enzymes that digest cellular waste. This allows the liver to quickly remove harmful fats such as triglycerides.
Ceramides, which cause inflammation, are also removed.
CBD or CBG – which works better?
Both substances are very helpful to the liver. They stabilize blood sugar levels. However, CBG has some advantages over CBD.
Research shows that CBG has a stronger effect on several important parameters:
CBG is much more effective at reducing body fat mass. CBG is more effective in reducing insulin resistance. CBG significantly reduces the level of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) in the blood.
It is worth adding that these compounds do not act through classic receptors in the brain. They also do not affect the amount of food consumed by animals. They act directly inside liver cells.
The future of metabolic disease treatment
The discoveries from Jerusalem offer great hope.Natural compounds from cannabis may become new treatments for liver disease. They show that treating obesity is not just about diet.It is also important to repair cellular cleaning mechanisms.
Scientists now need to conduct human trials. Before CBD and CBG reach pharmacies as liver medications, we still have some work to do.However, the direction has already been set.
