Cresco Labs Will Launch a Cannabis Ad on Spotify
Promoting cannabis in the United States is no small task. Although it is legal in some states, it is still prohibited at the federal level. In 2021, Marketing Brew described Cresco Labs’ advertising strategy. The company is focusing on podcast ads to dynamically tailor content to places where marijuana sales are legal. Cresco aims to “normalize and professionalize the cannabis industry.”
Chicago-based cannabis company Cresco Labs Inc. made public that it will be the first in the cannabis industry to launch its ads on Spotify, the leader among audio streaming services, which enjoys more than 551 million users and 220 million subscribers.
The campaign will focus on promoting Sunnyside, a chain of cannabis stores operated by Cresco Labs. It will feature 30-second audio ads and in-app banners that direct users to the company’s own e-commerce platform. As highlighted in the press release, the ads will primarily target Spotify listeners in Illinois, where cannabis for recreational use is legal.
Cory Rothschild, president of retail at Cresco Labs, expressed his excitement about the partnership with Spotify. “Streaming audio services offer great opportunities to reach a wide audience in a targeted way. Sunnyside’s advertising is based on a sophisticated data system, which allows for precise targeting of messages. With Spotify’s platform, we are able to reach our core customers in Illinois. This partnership will not only contribute to the normalization of marijuana, but also highlights our marketing capabilities.”

Sunnyside has locations in seven states. Last month, a new location opened in Palm Bay, Florida. “Our goal is to expand the Sunnyside brand and increase access to premium products in key locations in Florida,” Bachtell commented. The partnership with Spotify is a way for the company to reach a wide audience and another step in the normalization of cannabis in the US.
