European Sustainability Week

While sustainability initiatives in many European countries are facing political scrutiny and regulatory pressure is mounting, the European Sustainability Week (ESW) 2025 sent a clear message: business, academia, and politics are determined to drive sustainable change forward. From November 25th to 27th, the EUPD Group brought together more than 500 experts at Petersberg near Bonn to discuss the future of sustainable corporate governance.

Under the motto “Built on Trust. Driven by Insight. Focused on Impact,” the three-day conference focused on how sustainability can be permanently established under uncertain political conditions.

Insights and Momentum from the European Sustainability Week 2025

The ESG Summit, the highlight of the European Sustainability week, took place on November 26th. In six thematic blocks – ranging from social sustainability and financing issues to the potential of AI in ESG reporting – current trends and challenges were examined. Numerous leading figures in the European sustainability scene shared their insights and encouraged discussion. Both at the exhibition grounds and in the panels, it became clear that networking is a crucial key to advancing sustainability despite adverse conditions.

Recent developments surrounding COP30 in Brazil added further urgency. “None of us are victims; we are all agents of change,” cautioned sustainability thought leader Ralph Thurm in his opening address.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence was also a central theme at the European Sustainability Week. Prof. Dr. Anabel Ternès von Hattburg emphasized: “2025 is the year in which digitalization, regulation, and climate realities converge. Leadership must address this convergence. AI must not only provide data but also have an impact.”

Climate risks, uncertainties, and responsibility:

The stakeholder panel “Decarbonizing Europe’s Industry – The Real Cost of Uncertainty” received particular attention. Representatives from industry, academia, and politics – including Dr. Robert Habeck, Joachim Goldbeck, Melanie Kubin-Hardewig, and Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel – discussed why the costs of inaction have long since outweighed investments in decarbonization.

Habeck criticized the argument of uncertainty as an excuse: “The only uncertainty lies in the fact that decision-makers don’t know whether their decisions will turn out well for themselves. Others would call that freedom or responsibility. We shouldn’t hide behind the concept of uncertainty.”

Recognition for Sustainability Pioneers at the European Sustainability Week

The summit was accompanied by several award ceremonies, including:

ESG Transparency Award,
Energy Transition Award,
SolarProsumer Award:

These awards recognize pioneers and set industry-wide standards. They promote transparency, responsible corporate governance, and long-term impact.

Another highlight was the presentation of the Corporate Health Award at a festive gala on November 25. For the 17th time, the EUPD Group, the Handelsblatt Media Group, and the German bKV Service honored companies for excellent workplace health management – an indicator that social sustainability is increasingly coming into focus.

Visible headwinds, yet a clear course:

Despite political tensions, the EUPD Group is sensing a growing willingness among businesses to firmly establish sustainable strategies. CEO Markus AW Hoehner explains:

“We are noticing increasing uncertainty regarding the importance of ESG in the market. At the same time, more and more companies are recognizing that sustainability must become central to their operations in order to remain viable in the future. With European Sustainability Week, we want to support this process, ask critical questions, and promote cross-industry dialogue.”

The successful event is planned to continue in 2026. One thing is already clear: the debate about sustainability will become more intense, more binding and more crucial for Europe’s economic future.
