Ithaca: Climate Road Trip RPG on Climate Resistance
The Pixel Hunt has announced Ithaca, a narrative RPG set during a road trip involving an environmental lawyer and a hostage, exploring climate resistance through branching dialogue and player choices. The Kickstarter campaign is underway, nearing its funding goal. The studio emphasizes environmental responsibility, rejecting generative AI due to ethical and ecological concerns.
A few weeks ago, The Pixel Hunt announced Ithaca, a game set during a road trip starring Penelope. With names like these, aside from the author’s, it’s understandable that our minds immediately turn to a certain poem that Nolan will soon adapt for the big screen.
We don’t know if this Penelope is married to Odysseus, but we do know that she’s driving a car with a hostage in the trunk. This might be related to her involvement in a “radical environmental movement”—we’ll find out if the project secures its Kickstarter funding.
Crowdfunding campaign launched for the game Ithaca
Ithaca is a narrative RPG about “climate resistance” starring an environmental lawyer. During the road trip, we’ll encounter various conversations where our choices will shape the story, as well as develop certain aspects of our protagonist, who, like the player, lacks complete information about the operation we’re involved in.
During the month-long crowdfunding campaign for Ithaca, The Pixel Hunt founder Florent Maurin is on a road trip to Ithaca, a journey that’s giving him the opportunity to meet with other developers and discuss their projects and their perspectives on the profession. His latest Kickstarter update was posted from Zagreb, but last night he uploaded a video to social media, still in Croatia, focusing on the heatwave currently hitting Europe and the undeniable problems of climate change.
The Pixel Hunt team understands the importance of doing everything possible to avoid contributing to global warming, which is why they’ve formally committed to not using generative AI in Ithaca. This commitment stems from both “copyright issues and the threat it poses to employment” and the “extremely high environmental cost” of this technology: “Humanity can’t afford this crap.” They’ve also stated that they will optimize the game as much as possible to reduce the electricity required for it to run once released, and “make sure it works on older computers.”
Less than two weeks remain in the Kickstarter campaign to support the development of Ithaca, and so far the project has raised €18,000 of its €25,000 goal. It recently reached 50% of its target, and the final days of these types of campaigns usually see an increase in contributions, but you never know. To find out what The Pixel Hunt is working on, you can request access to the game’s playtest on Steam.
You might recognize Ithaca because it was one of the games featured at the last Day of the Devs, where the Kickstarter was announced and the end of 2027 was set as a potential launch window; you might also recognize it because you follow The Pixel Hunt, since the Parisian studio was one of the developers of Wednesdays, the game written by Pierre Corbinais that addresses intrafamilial sexual abuse, released last year.
