Successful Crowdfunding Campaign for the Tower of Erés, Spain

In May 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the Erés bell, which had accompanied the Galliguera area in its struggle against the Biscarrués reservoir for 33 years, was recovered. Now a crowdfunding campaign to restore the Tower of Erés was launched, and it has been a success.

A church that seemed destined to disappear under the waters of the Biscarrués reservoir is now going to emerge thanks to a wave of solidarity. Erés is a town of 10 inhabitants that for more than 30 years has lived with the threat of the reservoir and that, once the project was canceled, started a crowdfunding campaign for the restoration of the tower of San Jorge, which would cost around €6,000.

The crowdfunding campaign has proven to be a success

“There are many who know our struggle for this territory and the victory over the Biscarrués dam project. The threat of this project has meant that the tower of San Jorge in Erés, which was destined to die drowned under the waters of the reservoir, has been saved from that but not from a bad situation after 30 years of abandonment,” said Lola Giménez, spokeswoman of the project in her presentation.

The tower of Erés is a symbol like the tower of Mediano that is now being restored and that of Jánovas, which after decades of ruin has already been fixed. “In these years of struggle against flooding, depopulation, and non-preservation of living territories we have always had a unique voice, the voice of our bell of Erés. A symbol of struggle and resistance that has led and united voices for more than 30 years for a common goal,” concluded Lola Giménez.

Well, the campaign is a success and before its completion on December 1st, the organization of crowdfunding pointed out that it has already reached the figure of €5,400 raised. Several ways to collaborate have been offered. Among them, is through a deposit in the account of the coordinator.

To encourage donors, different rewards have been set up.

For €10, the prize is a backpack or a towel from the Gállego river; for €25, the book La Campana de Erés; for €50, the possibility of rafting, paintball, or arborism with the collaboration of adventure sports companies from Murillo de Gállego. With a contribution of €100 a forest bath and a concert are offered, two exclusive experiences. A forest bath in the Botanical Path with a walk and music. An experience in the unique grove of Biscarrués that will allow you to feel, smell, touch, look, disconnect and reconnect with nature. A walk among trees with mindfulness exercises and sensory awareness.

In May 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, the Erés bell, which had accompanied the Galliguera area in its struggle against the Biscarrués reservoir for 33 years, was recovered. Then, the Coordinadora Biscarrués-Mallos de Riglos toured the villages of Murillo de Gállego, Agüero, Riglos, Concilio, Ayerbe, and Biscarrués, until reaching Erés in a popular and festive celebration after the court overturned the dam project that had been fought against for more than three decades.

The ruling of the Supreme Court, which ratified a few weeks earlier the dismissal of the Biscarrués reservoir, was a relief and a sense of definitive victory in the area known as the Galliguera after three decades of struggle.
