Crowdfunding Campaign for a Drone that Could Help Save Fawns
The Hegering Balve has started a project on the crowdfunding platform “Many create more” of the Volksbank in Südwestfalen eG and collected a total of €3,775. However, the acquisition of the drone is very cost-intensive at €7,000 and cannot be borne by the association alone – €4,000 are available as federal funding.
Fawns like to hide in dense grass stands on agricultural land. This is where they are best protected from predators. However, this supposed protection also harbors the greatest danger, because farmers who work the areas with their mowers also fail to see the animals. Severe mutilation or even death of the fawns is not uncommon.

The solution is drones with thermal imaging cameras
For its financing, the Hegering Balve has started a project on the crowdfunding platform “Many create more” of the Volksbank in Südwestfalen eG and collected a total of €3,775 (including €460 support from the Volksbank).
Volksbank submarket manager Christoph Tyralla presented a symbolic donation check to the first chairman of the Hegering Balve, Markus Grothe. “For many years now, we from the Hegering Balve have been voluntarily engaged in the rescue of fawns using thermal imaging drones. Until now, we have only been able to fly over the meadows due to mowing with a drone and securing fawns lying in the meadow.”
“If many farmers want to mow their meadows at the same time, bottlenecks are inevitable,” said Markus Grothe. In order for the search with the thermal imaging camera to work well, the control flights are also dependent on the early, still cool morning hours. A second drone was therefore needed to protect even more fawns from certain death by the mower.
25 fawns were saved with the help of drones
“This year, thanks to our drone, we were able to save 25 fawns – and with the new drone, there will be even more,” said Markus Grothe. However, the acquisition of the drone is very cost-intensive at €7,000 and cannot be borne by the association alone – €4,000 are available as federal funding. The solution: the crowdfunding platform of the Volksbank in Südwestfalen. “Our donation target was €3,000, which is enough for a new drone. In the end, we were even able to collect €3,775 and clearly exceeded our own goal. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all donors.”
Hegering Balve performs an invaluable service
“The fawns cannot protect themselves, they simply still lack the escape reflex. Hiding in the grass protects them from predators, but not from the mower. With its drones, the Hegering Balve performs an invaluable service for the protection of the fawns during the mowing season.”
“A really important project that has rightly found many supporters,” said Volksbank submarket manager Christoph Tyralla when handing over the symbolic donation check. Volksbank supports every donation of €5 or more with a co-funding of five euros as well. Independently of this, there is ten percent of the project sum for each project as start-up financing.
