Jena Crowdfunding Campaign Aims to Strengthen Democracy
The “Thuringia Together” initiative, using the “Jena Crowd” platform, aims to raise €20,000 by August 16 to counteract rising populism. Through storytelling cafés, democracy festivals, and comprehensive campaigns, it seeks to strengthen democratic values, voter turnout, and community spirit in Thuringia ahead of the September 1, 2024, state elections.
With the help of the municipal utility’s donation platform “Jena Crowd”, the “Thuringia Together” initiative, in cooperation with the ” World-Open Thuringia ” initiative, is collecting donations for a Thuringia-wide campaign to promote democracy until August 16th.
The donation goal is 20,000 euros. Thanks to the crowdfunding principle, supporters can participate in the fundraising with even small amounts.
Populist movements undermine democratic values in Thuringia
“Thuringia is facing a crucial challenge: With the upcoming state elections on September 1st, 2024, the democratic structure of the Free State is at risk from increasing populist movements.
This not only undermines democratic values, but can also lead to significant blockages in state politics and endanger Thuringia’s social and economic stability,” said the project’s co-initiators, Sandra Bach and Nils Volkmann.
To counteract this, the “Thuringia Together” initiative, in cooperation with “World-Open Thuringia”, is launching a comprehensive communications campaign to strengthen democratic values and promote voter turnout.
The goal: to reach people in their everyday lives
This is to be achieved with the help of storytelling cafés and democracy festivals in rural areas, which are to be organized together with community members throughout Thuringia. Art, cuisine and music are to contribute to the exchange of experiences between and with long-time residents and newcomers.
The events will be accompanied by a digital information campaign and an analogue on-site campaign, for example through social media calls, fact checks and videos from the communities as well as banners and posters in central locations.
The aim is to reach people in their everyday lives: at the bakery on the bag of bread, on billboards during walks, in information postcards in the mailbox and in video messages on YouTube . The campaign is intended to appeal to almost all eligible voters in Thuringia.
Strengthening cohesion in communities
“Thuringia Together” wants to make the concerns and issues of people in rural Thuringia visible and call on them to vote. The theme of solidarity is intended to strengthen the community spirit in the 605 municipalities and communities.
Supporting clubs and organizations such as the Thuringian Fire Department, the Thuringian Sports Association and the local Protestant Church can take up the campaign and use it in their communities to strengthen exchange and cooperation locally for the benefit of democratic values.
8000 companies and private individuals are taking part
“Cosmopolitan Thuringia” is an initiative that is committed to a cosmopolitan and diverse Thuringia. Around 8,000 companies, institutions and private individuals have already joined the initiative. The community stands for respect for human dignity and indivisible human rights and reminds people of Germany’s historical responsibility, especially for the crimes committed during the National Socialist era.
The initiative advocates pluralistic democracy and the rule of law and promotes peaceful and respectful interaction with one another. Prejudice, exclusion and hatred have no place in a cosmopolitan and diverse Thuringia.
